After a short time studying electric guitar at the age of fourteen, Gary was soon taken in by the charms of the classical guitar. He went on to complete a degree in music at The University of Cape Town, majoring in guitar and ethnomusicology. He has taught for a number of years in Cape Town and in Edinburgh. He has a passion for traditional and folk music from various parts of the world and has a particular interest in the role that music plays in these societies.
