Creative music classes

Children can join our Creative Music Classes at any stage from birth to Primary 2 age. These preparatory music classes take children on a musical journey through all the key stages of their musical development with the ultimate aim of preparing them for our group instrumental classes which are offered when children reach Primary 3.

There are many classes to choose from ranging from:

  • Baby and Toddler: birth to 18 months and 18 months to 3 years
(Tuesday mornings in Musselburgh and Friday mornings in Portobello)
  • Preschool: 3 to 5 years (Saturday)
  • Primary 1 and Primary 2 (Saturday)

Once children reach Primary 3 they can choose to learn violin, cello, recorder, flute, clarinet, saxophone, piano, guitar, drums/percussion or singing.

Creative Music Class: babies and toddlers
(0 to 18 months and 18 months to 3 years)

Tuesday and Friday mornings

Babies and toddlers love music, puppets, bouncing and tickling games, rhymes, singing books, simple instruments and time with their carer just having fun. In our baby and toddler classes we combine all of these elements to make varied, fun filled sessions, which introduce all of the the basics of music making.

You will learn games and songs to enjoy with your children as they develop a musical awareness and creativity without knowing that they are learning. We use familiar nursery rhymes and songs along with material developed for the particular age groups. These encourage feeling the beat, listening skills, an awareness of musical events such as sound and silence, fast and slow, loud and soft, high and low etc. Songs learned in the appropriate vocal range for the age group encourage singing at pitch, and pop up puppets make our response songs lots of fun.

These classes are the start of your child's musical journey and progress naturally into the creative music classes at pre-school, P1 and P2 level. From this beginning, instrumental lessons follow in P3.

Meet your teacher Anna (Portobello) and Holly (Musselburgh), and enrol now for Tuesday or Friday mornings.

Creative Music Class: Primary 2

Saturday

In these classes we will continue to develop basic musical skills in pitch, rhythm and dynamics. Using musical games, songs from all over the world and taking inspiration from many styles of music, children will have direct involvement in making and creating music. Using voice and an array of percussion instruments is part of every session, working individually, in pairs or as part of the group. Children will continue to develop listening skills and performing skills with the instruments available, as well as being encouraged to explore creative possibilities.

As children reach this stage in their musical development it is important that we are sensitive to their musical preferences as they are almost ready to begin learning a musical instrument. This class will introduce the children to an array of musical instruments including all the instruments available in Primary 3. We will be able to advise on the next stage of your child’s musical development.

Meet your teacher Louise, and check availability for Saturday.
