About
Portobello Music School was formed in 2005 by Edinburgh-based composer and music educator, Brian Cope. It provides comprehensive music education to over 200 children aged preschool to Primary 7 from across Edinburgh and the Lothians. We specialize in teaching music to children in a fun, friendly and creative environment where children have the freedom to develop a love and appreciation for music, while building fundamental musical skills that are continually developed throughout their time at the school.
Our approach has been developed to support our belief that every child is musical and that they should have the opportunity to develop in music to whatever level they aspire. We recognize that all children learn differently and therefore draw on a variety of pedagogical methods from the traditional to the contemporary to ensure that no child is left behind in their music education.
Our dynamic team of music teachers and instructors come from a wide variety of backgrounds in music education and all share a wonderful capacity for enthusing and nurturing our pupils’ love for music.
Our programme of classes include creative music, solo singing, choirs, composition, and group instrumental instruction in violin, cello, acoustic guitar, electric guitar, recorder, clarinet, saxophone, drums/percussion and piano/keyboard with new instruments being offered each year. After completing up to three years of group instrumental instruction, children are offered individual lessons.Once they have achieved a basic level of playing and note reading, they are encouraged to join one of our ensembles, which currently includes a string ensemble, guitar ensemble, rock/pop ensembles and the newly formed Edinburgh and Lothian Children’s Orchestra.
Our Saturday morning music classes take place at Towerbank Primary School in Portobello, which is located 100m from Portobello Promenade, ideal for a morning stroll! We also have a waiting area where parents can enjoy a tea or coffee while reading the Saturday papers. Our weekday classes take place at Jewel and Esk Valley College’s state of the art music facility: CRE:8.
